History
Fenerbahçe was founded nearly a century ago in the province of Kadýköy in Istanbul. The founders were Mr. Nurizade Ziya Songülen, Mr. Ayetullah and Mr. Necip Okaner. This group of individuals founded the club secretly in order to keep a low profile and not get into any trouble with the strict Ottoman rule. So strict in fact that the Sultan, Abdulhamit the 2nd, forbid that the Turkish youth may not set up a club nor engage in the game of football played by the English families that was watched in envy.
After the first meeting of the founders however, Nurizade Ziya Songülen is elected the first President, whilst Mr. Ayetullah is the General Secretary and Mr Necip Okaner assumes General Captaincy. The first emblem of the club is the Lighthouse which is situated on Fenerbahçe cape whilst the first colours of the club are the colours of the daffodils, white and yellow, scattered around the Fenerbahçe peninsula. The emblem and colours were to be changed in 1910 when the badge was redesigned by Topuz Hikmet and the colours were changed as Yellow and Navy.Until a change of legislation in 1908, Fenerbahçe’s activities are run under strict secrecy. After this date however, the new law requires that clubs must register in order to exist legally. From that day on, the club was to take its place amongst the top of the Turkish club’s and achieve much success.Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü first football team included Asaf, Ziya Hasan, Sami, Ayetullah, Mazhar, Necip Fethi, Galip, Huseyin, Hasan and Nevzat. This team joined the Istanbul League in 1909 but achieved nothing in its first three seasons. In the 1912-1913 season a team with Ali Said, Galip, Arif, Izzi, Huseyin, Sabri, Hikmet, Said, Hasan Kamil, Nuri and Mico win the first championship of the club. Apart from being the first championship it had more significance as it was won without a single defeat throughout the season.

Atatürk and Fenerbahçe
The founder of the Turkish Republic, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk was a Fenerbahce supporter. On the 10th of August, after a 3-3 draw against Galatasaray in the Gazi Cup Ataturk was with three Galatasaray and 2 Fenerbahce supporters who were sitting next to him, where he was quoted: "We are three on three here, because I’m a Fenerbahce supporter too".

When the club’s building at Kusdili burnt down, the first donation for a new building came from our great leader Ataturk.

Ataturk has also visited the club and has signed the book of honour where he wrote the following sentence:
"I was informed about Fenerbahce Club’s admirable activities and had made it a duty for me to visit and congratulate the club. That visit has fallen on this day and hereby I record my tribute and congratulations."

Emblem
The Fenerbahçe emblem was designed by Topuz Hikmet who played left wing in 1910 and was made by Tevfik Haccar (Taşcı) in London. The emblem consists of five colours. The white section which includes the writing ’Fenerbahçe Spor Kulubu 1907’ represents purity and open heartedness, the red section represents love and attachment to the club and symbolises the Turkish flag. The yellow middle section symbolises admiration and envy, while the navy symbolises nobility. The ’oak acorn’ leaf which rises from the navy and yellow section shows the power of Fenerbahçe. The green colour of the leaf shows the success of Fenerbahçe is imperative.
Topuz Hikmet describes the story of our emblem like this:
"After the change of the club’s colours from yellow and white to yellow and navy, it was an issue to create an emblem with our new colours. My friends left the design of this emblem to me.
Firstly, I brought together the colours of our national flag, red and white. Then drew a heart shape over the red and gave it a yellow and navy colour, adding an acorn leaf that represents resistance, power and strength. I wrote the club name and foundation date on the white section. When drawing our emblem, I tried to give this meaning: ‘Serving the club with dependence from heart.’

The design was liked by my friends and our new emblem was made through the guidance of Tevfik Haccar, who was in Germany at time. After the new alphabet was approved, the design was protected, but the club name on the emblem was changed to ’Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü - 1907’.

Fenerbahçe - AZ Alkmaar

Valentines will be reunited tonight when a packed Şükrü Saracoğlu watches its beloved Fenerbahçe host AZ Alkmaar, in the first leg of this crucial UEFA Cup tie. Zico has to pick from a weakened squad, but so does Louis van Gaal, who was only able to bring 16 players to Istanbul.
The experienced Dutch manager has confidence in his young AZ team and expressed that he believes they can get a positive result from this leg. "It would have been nice to have more choices, but in the end only 11 players can start.
"Luirink will play with Kew Jaliens in our defence. That is why they played together a couple of times together in our second team. I ** confident that they will perform against the strong forwards of Fenerbahçe."
Van Gaal has a depleted defence in particular with Barry Opdam and David Mendes da Silva both suspended.
Joey Didulica cannot play due to concussion, Stijn Schaars has an ankle injury and Simon Cziommer is still recovering from a thigh problem. Former Trabzonspor and Ajax striker Shota Arveladze is also missing out from the flu.
Kick-off is at 20:00.

Fenerbahçe 3-3 AZ Alkmaar

AZ Alkmaar have three away goals to take back to Holland as 3-3 thriller was played out at a frantic Şükrü Saracoğlu. Demy de Zeeuw seemed to walk it into the goal in the 15th minute, before Tümer Metin equalised in the 28th with a rocket of a volley. Nourdin Boukhari and Julian Jenner scored two successive goals in a minute, stunning the home crowd.
Tuncay Şanlı’s extreme physical effort was sparking enthisasm and he clawed a goal back with a close range volley in the 67th minute.
Tümer scored with a blissful strike with 15 minutes to go, levelling the score with Louis van Gaal’s side once again.

Fenerbahçe 1-0 Sakaryaspor

Fenerbahçe defended a slender 1-0 lead against Sakaryaspor to the final whistle in a game which was a tale of two halves, as the visitors piled on the pressure in the second period. Tümer Metin got the winner to continue his good form on his return to first team action.
Fatigue from the AZ Alkmaar game may have been the reason for Zico’s men to fall from the action in the second half, but the first half performance gave something to build on prior to the crucial second leg against the Dutch outfit.

AZ Alkmaar 2-2 Fenerbahçe

A 2-0 lead was thrown away to AZ Alkmaar in the second half which was very reminiscent of this season’s European adventures. Tümer Metin’s bliss left foot strike and Alex de Souza’s rage-filled blast from his very own left peg gave us a two goal cushion going into half time. Louis van Gaal’s change in stategy shattered that of Zico’s, sending the AZ fans into unexpected joy.
Tümer and Alex’s fluid passing whilst using the presence of Mateja Kezman up front was clearly the danger for AZ from the outset. Kezman set up Tümer for the first goal with a well weighted through pass for the first goal in the 21st minute.
Alex’s sweet pass to Kezman for a one-two was then finished off in fine fashion by the Brazilian in the 34th minute, 2-0.
Louis van Gaal did not have to be a wealthily experienced manager to spot the failing left side of Fenerbahçe, as Tuncay Şanlı and Ümit Özat were put under a lot of strain from the whistle to start the second half.
AZ did not have a spell of pressure, but a complete 45 minutes of it, reaping the first fruit in the 64th minute when de Zeeuw slotted in from the left.
Tuncay could have put the game beyond reach, but he put an easy chance amateurly over the bar three minutes after AZ’s goal.
Zico made his first change of the game in the 81st minute.
Koevermans scored the killer goal with a header at the back post, unmarked, on Martens’ free-kick, condemning us to the sole posibility of domestic glory in our centenary year.

Fenerbahçe 3-0 Konyaspor

Marco Aurelio’s goal just before half time turned the second 45 minutes into a comfortable ride against Konyaspor, with Mateja Kezman and Alex de Souza scoring a goal a piece to make the final score 3-0.
Aurelio scored with a header on the end of a corner, as did Kezman who was unmarked at the back post to slot in for 2-0. Alex’s goal was classic of his ability. The Brazilian started the move with a headed pass, before he made a vertical run across half of the pitch to slot in through the keeper’s legs as he received a low cross from Ümit Özat.

Bursaspor 0-4 Fenerbahçe
3/17/2007

It was a tale of two halves at Bursa as Zico’s team produced four goals in the second set of 45 minutes. Alex de Souza turned on the style by scoring twice. Mateja Kezman and Deniz Barış were the other players to get on the scoresheet.
It was a balanced game before the half time whistle, but we came out all guns blazing after the interval and produced an early goal through Alex’s header onto Kezman’s delicate cross.
Önder Turacı’s cross from the right was converted by Kezman in the 50th minute, giving us a two goal lead in the space of two minutes.
Deniz darted from midfield with a run and picked up Kezman’s through ball to slot home for the third in the 62nd minute.
Tuncay skipped past three players and entered the box from the left before pulling the ball back to Alex for his second goal in the 78th minute.
The win takes us to 51 points in the Süper Lig.

Present
Currently, Fenerbahçe have the highest average attendance in the Turkish league.[19] The Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium is the biggest club stadium in Turkey. This stadium also frequently hosts national team games. The club chairman Aziz Yıldırım, who stepped down at the end of the 2005-06 season, won re-election.[20] He served his fourth two-year term since coming to power. Fenerbahçe's climbing team carries Fenerbahçe flags at the tops of famous mountains all over the world for the centenary year celebrations.[21]

Best European matches
Despite being the wealthiest Turkish club that regularly improves its squad with international stars, Fenerbahçe has never made a successful run in European competition. Their only European triumph came in the now-defunct Balkans Cup. There are no significant memorable events other than individual home wins; Fenerbahçe has never been able to advance past qualifying groups in European Champions League. Fenerbahçe is notable, however, for ending the 40-year old European unbeaten home record of Manchester United after a 1–0 win at Old Trafford
