Bilim kurgu filmlerinin ilk örneklerinden '2001: Bir Uzay Destanı' filminin posteri

Bilim kurgu filmi, sıklıkla fütüristik uzay mekikleri, robotlar veya diğer teknolojiler eşliğinde; dünya dışı yaşam formları, yabancı gezegenler ve zaman yolculuğu gibi hayali fenomenlerin spekülatif ve bilime dayalı tasvirlerini kullanan film türüdür.
Bilim kurgu filmi, geçmişten günümüze siyasal ve toplumsal konularda toplumsal eleştiri yapma ve "bizi insan yapan şeyin ne olduğu" gibi felsefi konuları araştırma amaçlı olarak sıklıkla kullanılan bir film türü olmuştur.
Bilim kurgu film türü, sessiz sinemanın ilk yıllarından -Georges Melies'in hileli fotoğraf efektleriyle izleyiciyi büyüleyen Aya Seyahat (1902) filminin yapılışından- beri varlığını sürdürmektedir. Bilim kurgu filmleri, 1930'lardan 1950'lere kadar düşük bütçeli B filmleri olarak çekilmekteydi. Ancak Stanley Kubrick'in dönüm noktası niteliğindeki 2001: Bir Uzay Destanı (1968) filminden sonra, bilim kurgu film türü daha ciddi biçimde ele alınmaya başladı. 1970'lerin sonlarında, özel efektlerle doldurulan yüksek bütçeli bilim kurgu filmleri sinema seyircisi arasında popüler hale geldi. 1977 yılında çekilen ve muazzam biçimde etkili olan Yıldız Savaşları ve Üçüncü Türden Yakınlaşmalar filmleri, E.T. (1982) ve Siyah Giyen Adamlar (1997) gibi gelecek on yıllar içinde çekilecek büyük bütçeli hit bilim kurgu filmlerinin yolunu açmıştır.
