İngilizcede Yes-No sorusu yapmak için tek yapmanız gereken yardımcı fiili cümlenin başına getirmektir. Bu yardımcı fiiller şunlardır:
be (am,is,are), have/has/had, will, would, can, could, shall, should, may, might ve must
Örnek bazı cümleler:
Olumlu cümle:The taxi is here.Ann has arrived.You can play.Soru cümlesi:Is the taxi here?Has Ann arrived?Can you play?
Aşağıdaki tabloda, solda karışık verilen kelimeler, sağda düzeltilerek soru cümlesi yapılmıştır:
you ready areAre you ready?telephoned she has MaryHas she telephoned Mary?swim your brother canCan your brother swim?tired ate youAre you tired?he at is homeIs he at home?go must now youMust you go now?Spanish they speak canCan they speak Spanish?tomorrow you be here willWill you be here tomorrow?she will arrive by trainWill she arrive by train?
Eğer olumlu cümlede bir yardımcı fiil yok ise, özneden önce do/does/did yardımcı fiilleri cümlenin başına getirilir. Fiiller de yalın yani mastar halde (to olmadan) kullanılır. -s almış ise -s kaldırılır, fiil 2. halde kullanılmış ise 1. hale çevrilir.
Olumlu cümle:I need a visa.Soru cümlesi:Do I need visa?Olumlu cümle:John wants to go home.Soru cümlesi:Does John want to go home?
Aşağıda you ile kurulmuş yes/no sorularını inceleyelim:
  • Do you understand?
  • Did you call me?
  • Do you drink coffee?
  • Do you like jazz?
  • Did you know Andrew?
  • Do you work in London?
Aşağıda he ile kurulmuş yes/no sorularını inceleyelim:
  • Does he play football?
  • Does he speak Arabic?
  • Does he know Mr Peters?
  • Does he work in London?
Özneden önce sadece yardımcı fiil kullanılır:
Doğru:Is her father working todayYanlış:Is working her father today?Doğru:Has your brother got children?Yanlış:Has got your brother children?
Eğer cümleler uzun öznelere sahipse buna da dikkat edelim:
  • Is Ann coming tomorrow?
  • Are Ann and her mother coming tomorrow?
Aşağıdaki cümlelerin, Yes-No soru cümlesi yapılmış hallerini inceleyelim:
  • The boss's secretary travels a lot.Does the boss's secretary travel a lot?
  • The President and her husband have arrived.Have the President and her husband arrived?
  • Your sister Caroline is talking to the police.Is your sister Caroline talking to the police?
  • All the people here understand Spanish.Do all the people here understand Spanish?
  • The man at the table in the corner is asleep.Is the man at the table in the cornet asleep?
