Günümüzde Green Day olarak bilinen grubun ilk adı Sweet Children'ı Rodeo-Kaliforniya'da oluşturan Billie ve Mike, John Sweet High School kafeteryasında ilk tanıştıklarında 10 yaşlarındaydılar..Kuzey Kaliforniya underground punk sounduna sahip bu grup evlerinde Ozzy Osbourne,Def Leppard ve Van Halen dan heavy metal şarkıları çalarak başladılar müzik hayatlarına. Billie ilk şarkısı Why Don't Want Him?i annesi ve üvey babası için yazdığında 14 yaşındaydı.
1987 yılında gruba John Kriftmeyer(Al Sobrante-davul) dahil oldu ve grubun adı Green Day olarak değişti.Sonrasında grup cafelerde çalmaya başladı. 1989 yılında grup bağımsız ilk EP leri 1,000 Hours u kaydettiler.Bu EP yi Sweet Children ve Slappy EP leri izledi.Grubun resmi ilk albümü önceki EP lerinin kombinasyonu olan 1039/Smoothed Out Slappy Hour yerel bir firma Lookout! Records tarafından 1990 yılında yayınlandı.Sonrasında John Kriftmeyer eğitimi yüzünden gruptan ayrılmaya karar verdi.
John'un ayrılması sonrasında gruba Tré Cool(Frank Edwin Wright,III) dahil edildi.Tré ile ilk grubun ikinci albümü Kerplunk ile grup 5 ulusal turne düzenledi.Bu albüm grubun büyük firmalar tarafından tanınmasını sağladı ve Reprise Records ile anlaşmaya bağlandı.Bu firmayla ilk albüm 1994 yılında yayınlanan Punk rock soundlu Dookie idi.Albümden çıkan ilk single Longview ile Dookie hit oldu.İkinci single Basket Case ile Amerika Modern Rock listelerinde 5 hafta zirvede kaldı.
Yaz sonunda Woodstock'94 şovu albüm satışlarını arttırmaya en büyük etken oldu.Albümün 4.single ı When I Come Around ile grup Amerika Modern Rock listelerinde 7 hafta birinciliğini korudu.Dookie sadece Amerika'da 5 milyondan, uluslararası 10 milyondan fazla sattı.Ve bu albüm 1994 Grammy ödül töreninde Best Alternative Music Performance ödülünün sahibi oldu. Green Day 1995 sonbaharında Insomniac albümünü yayınladı.Modern Rock listelerinde J.A.R şarkısıyla birinci sırada olmayı bildi. Albüm 1996 baharına kadar 2 milyon kopya sattı. 1997 yılında Nimrod albümünü piyasaya sürdüler. Bu albümünde başarısının ardından grup üyeleri kendi ailelerini kurmaya başladı. Ve aileleriyle vakit geçirebilmek için müziğe 2 yıl ara verdiler.
2000 yılında Green Day müzik piyasasına Warning albümüyle geri döndü. Bu albüm grup için farklı bir sounda sahipti. Albüm daha olgun punk içeriyordu ve malesef fanları ve eleştirmenler tarafından fazla tutulmadı. Albümün en büyük hiti Minority idi. Sonraki 4 yıl birkaç turne ve toplama albümlerle (International Superhits-2001, Shenanigans-2002) geçti. Eylül 2004'te yayınlanan American Idiot albümü Amerika hükümetine ve medyasına bir eleştiri içeriyordu. Bu albüm Dünya Billboard listelerinde 1 numaraya yerleşti. İlk single albümünde adını taşıyan American Idiot parçasının başarısını Boulevard Of Broken Dreams izledi. American Idiot albümü 7 Grammy ödülüne aday gösterildi ve Best Rock Album ödülünü aldı.MTV Video Music Awards'da 7 ödül kazanan grup Kerrang'danda 2 ödül kaptı. Bu albümünde başarısı gösterdi ki Green Day dünyanın yaşayan en iyi punk rock gruplarından birisi.
