this genre was almost single-handedly created by x-japan. today it has spawned a whole family of subgenres that maintain the same visual elements:

-オシャレ系- (oshare kei)
rucid, shoujou lolita 23 q, an cafe, charlotte, irokui, jewelry, jack11, aikuru, himeyuri, megamasso, serial⇔number, black jack, ruvie, eimy→☆, etc.

-コテ系- (kote kei)
D, glammy, ivys, metis gretel, celia'xeno, mercurius, cuartet, gazelle, phantasmagoria, the piass, -oz-, dio, ghost, panikku, black;list, nanashi, azalea, mist of rouge, 12012, gazetto (matina), syndrome, lar~mia, etc

-名古屋系- (nagoya kei)
the pumpkin head, deathgaze, gullet, berry, sugar, jaguar, teddy etc.

-渋谷系- (shibuya kei)
spiral life, ピチカート・ファイヴ, オリジナル・ラヴ, フリッパーズ・ギター, コーネリアス, etc.

-アングラ系- (angura kei)
mucc, kalimero, heidi., metronome, SHILFEE AND TULIPCOROBOCKLES, jinkaku radio, It, inugami circus dan, guruguru ekigan, etc.

-ガイジン系- (gaijin kei)
Lamia, Eqlipse, Resonance etc.

-パンック- ultra (punk)

-コイ系- (koi kei) neo-visual

bla bla bla.. the list goes on, and there's always contraversy surrounding which band belongs to which kei.. it all depends on where they're from, their music style, and their "visual" factor
